What grade of lumber are the hive kits made from? Pura hive bodies & supers sold as kits are made from mill-run eastern white pine. Mill-run grade consists of various lumber grades and allows for functional knots and milling defects.
How much beeswax is coated on the frames? Our hive and super kits come pre-installed with double-waxed frames.
Is assembly required? No. The hive kit comes ready to go, right out of the box.
How are the joints secured? All Pura hive bodies & supers are glued with specially formulated, fully waterproof Hivebond 4000 wood glue. The dovetail joints are then stapled with 12 galvanized staples for long-lasting security.

Stronger joints.
Precision-cut dovetails interlock stronger than any other joint. Our half-blind design contains 25% less end grain exposure than standard box joints, reducing the opportunity to rot.
Better frame rest.
An inset frame rest creates a full top joint, so no need to worry about accidentally chipping your box at its corners as you remove a frame for inspection.
Broader handhold.
Tested and approved by commercial beekeepers across America, our extra-wide, deep-grooved handle makes lifting with gloves easy as pie. A gradual taper at the bottom of the handle repels all rainwater.
Tighter wood bonding.
We teamed up with Franklin Adhesives, Inc. to create Hivebond 4000 — a fully waterproof wood glue specific to the pine used in our products. This formula cross-binds with white-pine fibers to create ultimate bonding strength while keeping water out.
More moisture protection.
With the expertise of Sherwin-Williams® Performance Coatings Group, our latex primer and paint is specially formulated for beehives — ensuring prolonged protection from moisture, even in the most severe climates.
Loaded with assembled frames.
You’ve got the best box in beekeeping — Now you’ve got the best frame also. With a cell pattern that mimics the exact pattern found in natural comb and the strongest capping beeswax coating, our frames get drawn faster than any other frame.
